5 Tips for a Print-Ready STL File
Small tweaks to your STL that lead to cleaner prints, faster quotes, and fewer surprises.
A good STL saves everyone time. Here are the five things we check first when a new file lands in our queue.
1. Make sure the model is manifold — no holes, no flipped normals. Most slicers and free tools like Meshmixer or Blender can auto-repair small issues in seconds.
2. Set the correct scale before exporting. STL has no units, so a model that looks fine on screen might arrive at us 10× too small. Millimeters is the safe default.
3. Watch wall thickness. Anything thinner than about 1.2 mm can print, but it's fragile. Bump up thin walls where you can.
4. Design with the print orientation in mind. Overhangs steeper than ~45° need supports, which take longer and can leave surface marks. Rotating a part often removes half the supports.
5. Keep the file focused — one part per STL, or a plate of parts you actually want printed together. Extra hidden geometry adds slicing time and confusion.
